Solar Edge – Making the most of your space

At Solar and Wind Applications we don’t just install a pre-packaged system – we design everything for you, from ground up. When your roof gets tricky, with limited space on one roof, or issues with shading, we can design you a system which will make the most of your space to ensure good yields are still achieved. We have installed several systems using the Solar Edge system.

How Solar Edge Works

Solar Edge uses module level tracking to allow each module (solar panel) to operate independently of the rest. In normal string arrangements the modules all tie together, and shading or differing light hitting each panel causes significant performance reduction – shaded panels act like resistors, dropping the performance of the whole string.

Before and After - Solar Edge

You can see from this installation that there are 2 pitches and orientations used. Later in the day, when this photo is taken, there are still 3 panels working perfectly whilst the rest are shaded. A string system would have shut off in this scenario.

We also use several other string inverters (SMA, Fronius, Steca…) with both software and hardware designed to get around modest shading issues, too.

We work to all the required standards when calculating yields, but we go further to demonstrate why we make certain technical decisions. It is important to us that you understand the importance of getting the best system possible for your money.

Our customer from the site shown above made the comment:

“To help us to maximise the return on our investment, Solar and Wind Applications provided two schemes for our consideration.  The completeness of the presentation enabled us to select this solution, which although requiring more sophisticated and costly control circuitry, provided a higher electrical output and a shorter payback period. The installation and workmanship also satisfied this pedantic construction professional.”

Solar PV Season is here!

Roof optimised for shading

With summer finally seeming to have arrived, we have been busy installing solar PV systems and EMMAs for our customers. Now the sun’s come out, it just seems like a much more sensible idea. That said, all of our systems are designed to work all year round to reduce your electricity consumption and earn income from the Feed in Tariff.

Some of our customers opt to increase their returns, and make sure they are getting the most out of their system by installing EMMA along with their system. As you can see from the below photograph from the system at our office, EMMA is making sure (almost) all of the generated power is used on site, by sending any “spare” power to an immersion heater or other 3kW load. It does this completely proportionally and smoothly optimising your savings from your generator.

The PassivSystems display shows the net import/export in your home, allowing you to decide when to use appliances to make the most of your system. Here though, EMMA is doing all the hard work for us! PassivSystems Display with EMMA

We’ve had a growth spurt!

We were delighted to have this achievement brought to our attention recently. Solar and Wind Applications Ltd have had a growth spurt, appearing at number 26 of the 50 fastest growing companies  in Scotland of 2011, according to personalbest.co.uk.Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies

The survey is based on sales growth between 2010 and 2011, and we achieved a growth of 51.6%.

The list contains a lot of energy related companies, however we are the only renewable energy installation company. Quite remarkable knowing the number of new start businesses in 2010 who had a start from 0! With the introduction of the feed in tariff (FiT) scheme, we were able to expand the Solar PV installation side of our business allowing more systems to be designed and installed.

Whilst this expansion speeded up proceedings, we did not deviate from our policy to provide an honest and friendly approach to installing our systems. We did not employ sales personnel, nor did we subcontract, allowing us to ensure that all of our customers received the top notch treatment they deserve. This resulted in more work being referred from happy customers…and it all escalated from there!

Helping things along were our nomination as Energy Saving Trust Preferred Installer and our unique position to install EMMA, both setting us apart from our competitors.

Solar and Wind Applications have continued to thrive since changes in the FiT, always ensuring we maintain absolute customer satisfaction, and always ensuring we can offer high quality equipment at great prices.

Export Limit? We can help!

With the boom in renewable generation on all scales in the UK, grid connecting systems is becoming more and more costly due to grid connection constraints – from domestic solar PV to large wind or hydro turbine systems, we can limit generator export.

We have been working in collaboration with Coolpower Products in developing various solutions for grid connection restrictions for various scenarios, all revolving round the EMMA (Energy and Microgenerator MAnager). Results of these installations have been very positive, and have been providing DNOs with data demonstrating the export limiting properties of the equipment installed.

limit generator export - 100kW EMMA

Whether limiting to an agreed limit with your DNO, or completely stopping export, we can design a system to do the job.

As well as ensuring your installation can proceed without costly grid upgrades, the other benefit is complete energy use on site, adding further benefit to your generator. There are countless possibilities on how to use  this energy – from heating your home, to several homes or buildings, to materials drying – we can make sure the complete system maximises your return on investment significantly further that your generator alone ever could.

Find a renewable energy installer tool

If you’re reading this, then we hope that you like what you have seen so far from the Solar and Wind Applications team… but for more information on us or to have a look at some of our installs, you can find us on the new Scottish renewable energy installer tool, run by the Energy Saving Trust. Energy Saving Trust - Renewable Energy Installer Tool

All of the reference sites linked from there are not chosen by us, and often have contact details so that you can go and find out a real person’s real opinion of us. We are confident that all of our customers will provide you with great feedback on our installation and the service we provide.

If you have already had an installation by us, or any contact at all, please do leave us a review to let others know what you think!

The rest of the Energy Saving Trust website also has loads of great information about all kinds of renewables to help you save money and look after the environment.

Renewables Are Booming

Despite a perceived downturn in the Solar PV industry, Solar and Wind Applications are as busy as ever, working on several projects across Scotland and North East England, proving that renewables are booming.

We have projects on the go in commercial scale Solar PV, over 100 installations of Coolpower’s EMMA as part of a National Grid study as well as a number of bespoke design projects for large EMMA systems. All of this is making use of our years of experience in the industry, allowing us to make sure we are providing the best possible solution along with our superior customer service.

Electronics

We will be posting some new case studies and new articles about the above projects when they are completed.

As proved by all our activities, the renewable energy sector is still thriving, with benefits of installing equalling those available during the industry boom last year.

Get in touch with us to find out what we can do for you. We would be happy to discuss any of the products available on our website, and of course we are happy to work with you on a more unique project, too!

Customer Experience – Our Priority!

In all of our years of experience in the renewable energy and solar PV industry, ensuring our customer experience is one of pleasure is our priority. Customer Experience

We just came across this case study on Energy Saving Trust (EST) website which is a customer experience study for one of our solar PV installations in Glasgow in 2010.

The site posed a great challenge due to the listed building status, not to mention the logistics of the installation. We worked very closely with the EST advisory team, the customer and the planning office to ensure the installation and surrounding administration was completed efficiently and professionally.

It seems, from our customer’s comments that we succeeded – “knowledgeable, experienced and efficient”, were her comments to the EST.

Heating Controls Headache

When was the last time you used your heating controls to ensure that your boiler is heating your home efficiently?PassivSystems - Advanced Heating Controls - Schedule set up

This interesting research by Consumer Focus has shown that not many people understand their heating controls meaning they’re used either wrongly, or avoided altogether. This results in your home being too hot or too cold for the majority, and in doing this you’re wasting fuel (bad for the environment) and money (bad for your wallet!!).

But Solar and Wind Applications can offer you a solution!

The PassivSystems Advanced Heating Controls, or AHC, can be installed easily and wirelessly into almost any heating system, replacing or adding to your exisisting arrangement. This can then be controled by a simple user interface on a touch screen controller, allowing you to ensure maximum comfort in your home, without wasting fuel or hours of head scratching in tweaking your old complicated system.

What’s more, it also learns how your system is used – when you need hot water and how much – and does most of this setting up for you, ensuring you can sit back and watch the savings.

Get in touch with us to arrange an insallation or for a chat. Click the image on above for YouGen’s interesting coverage of the research (including a link to the full report), or have a look at www.passivsystems.com for more information.
